1. Empty pockets never held anyone back. Only empty heads and empty hearts can do that.
–Norman Vincent Peale
Never let having no money hold you back.
Think of ways to still achieve your goals even with no money.
I earned my degrees through scholarship programs.
I come from a very simple family. Our source of livelihood was farming. There was not enough money to send me to a university.
I got to a university through an entrance scholarship program. I graduated valedictorian in high school. The scholarship was good for 1 yr. I was free in tuition fee but no allowances.
On my second semester I applied as a working student. There I got a monthly allowance. Thus I was able to finish my bachelor’s degree.
Through a government scholarship program I was able to take my master’s degree.
I was given P70,000 (around $1500). I studied only Saturdays. I finished it in 3 yrs.
My other degree I got it also through a scholarship program. It was part of my benefit as employee of the university.
2. It always seems impossible until it’s done.
– Nelson Mandela
Everything is possible.
There is no problem without a solution. We just have to think of ways.
I used to teach in one university only. But as my girls are growing up they need more. I decided to take extra teaching jobs even on weekends.
At first I thought I cannot do it because I had no rest already. But I survived the 7 days a week teaching job.
3. Earth provides enough to satisfy every man’s needs, but not every man’s greed.
– Mahatma Gandhi
One needs to distinguish need from greed.
Needs are necessities. They can be satisfied.
Greed can’t be satisfied. You may have everything already but you still yearn for more.
4. If your ship doesn’t come in, swim out to meet it!
Money will not just drop on your lap.
Work. Work. Work.
Do not be the typical Juan Tamad.
Juan Tamad in the Philippine folklore is known for his laziness.
If he wants to eat a fruit, he goes lie down under the tree, opens his mouth and wait for the fruit to fall right into his mouth.
